Rugby World Cup Sevens 2009
qualifying continues this weekend with the Asian regional event in Hong Kong,
Japan's men and Kazakhstan's women favourites to win and book their places in
Dubai in March.
Japan heads the seedings in the 12-team men's
tournaments where two qualifier places are up for grabs, while reigning Asian
champions Kazakhstan will be looking to claim one of the three spots available
in the nine-team women's event, which will be played concurrently at the Hong
Kong Football Club.

Rugby Football Union beat Cambodia today to sweep both of its first ever home
test matches and win the HSBC Asian Five Nations Regional Tournament in
Jakarta. Today’s 55 – 3 demolition of
Cambodia followed Indonesia’s 23 – 11 win over Laos on Tuesday, 15 July, 2008.

Rugby Football Union marked a historic victory today, winning its first ever
home test match played today as part of the HSBC Asian Five Nations
Series. Indonesia beat Lao 23 – 11 in
the second of three matches in the HSBC Asian Five Nations Regional Tournament
- Jakarta.

At the
sun-drenched and breezy UPH stadium in Karawaci, Jakarta, fans saw the Lao
PDR take on Cambodia. In a fast moving game, the Lao PDR put on a
performance that mesmorised the crowd and the opposition. With some
slick handling and strong running, the Lao PDR scored a 33 - 0 victory
to take the Mekong Cup onto Lao soil for the first time.

(5 July Guam): The Philippines Rugby
Football Union national team today won the first HSBC Asian Five Nations Regional
Tournament by beating hosts Guam Rugby Football Union 20 – 8 in a tight
encounter at Wettengel Field.

27 June 2008, Guam: The Guam Rugby Football
Union marked its first test match victory in eight attempts since 2005 with a
comprehensive 74 – 0 win over Brunei in today’s opening match of the HSBC Asian
Five Nations Regional Tournament played today at Wettengel Field in Dededo,
Guam.
Guam leapt out to an early lead, scoring it
first try through fullback Edward Calvo in just the 10th minute.

(27 June 2008, Guam): The
Guam Rugby Football Union will host the Philippines and Brunei Rugby Unions in
the first of four regional tournaments to be played in the inaugural HSBC Asian
Five Nations Series.
The
Guam Regional Tournament will be played under a single round robin format with
the first match between Guam and Brunei kicking off on Sunday, 29 June, at
Wettengel Field, Dededo, Guam.

Bangkok,
14 June 2008: Thailand won the HSBC
Asian Five Nations Division II Tournament played today at the Army Stadium in
Bangkok. By virtue of their Division II
victory, Thailand is the qualifying team for the Rugby World Cup 2011
Qualifiers Asia Round I. Thailand also
earned promotion to the HSBC Asian Five Nations Division I Tournament in 2009,
which will serve as the Round II of the Rugby World Cup Qualifiers for
Asia.

[Bangkok, 11 June 2008]: Malaysia, top seeds in the HSBC Asian Five
Nations Division II Tournament, will face second seed and hosts Thailand in the
final of the HSBC Asian Five Nations Division II on Saturday June 14 2008 in
Bangkok. At stake is promotion to the
Asian Five Nations Division I Tournament in 2009 and the right to claim the
laurels as victors of the Rugby World Cup Qualification Round 1 for Asia.

10 June 2008]: After the successful
completion of the HSBC Asian Five Nations (A5N) Top 5 competition in May 2008,
the groundbreaking new regional rugby series enters its next stage with
tomorrow's kick-off of the Division II Tournament in Bangkok.
Adding
to the excitement surrounding the launch of the new series, the Division II
Tournament has been named by the International Rugby Board as Asia's first
qualifier event for Rugby World Cup 2011.
