The Asian Rugby Sevens Series rolls into Malaysian Borneo this weekend when 12 of the region's top sides to contest the Borneo Sevens title at the Likas Stadium in Sabah, Kota Kinabalu, on Saturday and Sunday with action likely to be just as wild as the animal life on the island.

Borneo is the world's third largest island and an important natural refuge for a tremendous array of plant and animal life including Orangutans, Asian Elephants, Sumatran Rhinoceros and Bornean Clouded Leopards and forms the third leg of the inaugural Asian Rugby Sevens Series.

Japan coach Mitsutake Hagimoto has labelled next week's Asian qualifiers in Singapore to determine the final team at Women's Rugby World Cup 2010 as matches they "cannot afford to lose" if the Women's Game is to continue to develop in the country.

The Japanese are one of four teams who will hope to join defending champions New Zealand, hosts and 2006 runners up England, bronze medallists France, Canada, USA, South Africa, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden and Australia at Women's Rugby World Cup from 20 August to 5 September next year.

This weekend Brunei hosts the second leg of the Asian Rugby Sevens Series, the new tournament designed to strengthen rugby standards throughout the entire region.

One month ago in Shanghai nine of the region's top teams competed for the first title, with Korea coming out on top by beating Japan in the final.

"It started with a real bang and the interesting thing that came out of Shanghai was that there were five teams who could have won it," said Jarrad Gallagher, IRB Regional Development Manager for Asia..

Just a week after the pools and match schedule were announced for the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens, the Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union (AGRFU) has unveiled New Zealander Shane Thornton as its new national Sevens coach.

Thornton is already putting his players through their paces with the team's new conditioning coach James Houghton as they battle for selection ahead of the opening leg of the 2009/10 IRB Sevens World Series.

Hong Kong received a "welcome boost" ahead of next month's Women's Rugby World Cup 2010 qualifier after making the most of home advantage to beat Singapore 22-17 at the So Kon Po Stadium.

Singapore will host the Asian qualifier, to determine the 12th and final team at Women's Rugby World Cup 2010, on 4-6 November with Hong Kong, Japan and Kazakhstan the other sides hoping to book their place in England.

The global Rugby family are celebrating the announcement that Rugby Sevens will be included at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

An overwhelming vote in favour of inclusion by the International Olympic Committee members at the 121st Session in Copenhagen - Rugby Sevens received 81 'yes' votes to only eight 'no' votes - means that the world's top men's and women's Rugby players will have the opportunity to compete for an Olympic Gold medal, the pinnacle of sporting achievement

In the week that Rugby Sevens joined the Olympic Games programme, the nation where the sport was created 126 years ago have been on a recce to India as part of their planning for the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Scotland headed out to New Delhi, which will become only the second Asian city to host the quadrennial Games next October, for a week-long training camp with captain Scott Forrest admitting the trip to a country where rugby continues to grow has been very beneficial for the squad.
