(12 November 2008) The
three-day Cathay Pacific/ Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens is Asia's premier
annual rugby event. The Hong Kong Rugby Football Union has unveiled the 24-team
line-up for the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens 2009 and at the
same time announced that tickets for the annual extravaganza will go on public
sale on 17 January 2009.
The 12 teams participating in all eight IRB Sevens World Series events in
2008/09 are: Argentina, Australia, England, Fiji, France, Kenya, defending Hong
Kong champions New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland, South Africa, USA and Wales.

Teams from Thailand and Iran
arrived in the Lao PDR this week in preparation for a 4 day rugby development
camp in Vientiane. Three days of training with coaches from around the region
began on the 26th November at the Polytechnic in Sapantong Village. Teams from
Iran and Thailand (Roi-Et, Mahasalakham and Loei) and the Lao PDR (Vientiane and
Nornsaat) are participating in the camp aimed at improving women’s rugby around
the Asia region.

(20 November 2008) Managers of the HSBC A5N Tournament announced today that a new Division 3 had been created and that Guam, Indonesia, Iran and the Philippines had all advanced out of the Development Levels of the tournament into the new Division.
The tournament, which is tentatively scheduled to be played from 30 June to 5 July in Manila, the Republic of the Philippines, will feature the potential for promotion to the upper divisions for successful teams. The HSB Asian Five Nations tournament is unique in the world of rugby in that it features both promotion and relegation and qualifies entries into the Rugby World Cup from the 26 rugby playing nations of Asia.

(Tainan, Chinese Taipei, Nov 15 2008) Chinese Taipei defeated Sri Lanka 35 – 23 in
today’s final match of the Round Robin HSBC Asian Five Nations Division I
Tournament at the Tainan Rugby Stadium in Chinese Taipei.
The win saw the third participating team in
the Tournament, the Guinness Singapore Rugby Lions, promoted to the elite HSBC
Asian Five Nations Top 5 competition for 2009.

Singapore scored a last minute try for the second match in
succession at the HSBC Asian Five Nations Division I tournament at Tainan Rugby
Park, this time to beat hosts Chinese Taipei 23-22 on Thursday.
Less than 48 hours after John Forrester’s conversion secured
a 20-20 draw with Sri Lanka in the opening match of the round robin tournament,
Singapore once again came from behind at the death to this time celebrate
victory.

(11 Nov. 2008, Tainan, Chinese Taipei) Singapore fly half John Forrester kicked a last
gasp conversion to snatch a 20-20 draw with Sri Lanka in the opening
match of the HSBC Asian Five Nations Division I at the Tainan Rugby
Stadium in Chinese Taipei.
Singapore had
trailed 20-10 with six minutes remaining, but a Forrester penalty cut
the deficit to seemingly secure at least a losing bonus point for his
side from a match played in cool and blustery conditions in Tainan.

(10 Nov. 2008 Buan, Korea) Korea made the most of home advantage to once again deny Hong
Kong in the final of the Asian Under 20 Championship, sealing a 19-11 victory
in Buan on Monday to secure the region’s place at the IRB Junior World Rugby
Trophy 2009.
The hosts were never behind in the match at the Buan Sports Park
and took the lead in only the fourth minute with a penalty from full back Hee
Chan Yang, although within minutes this was cancelled out by a kick from Hong
Kong scrum half Adam Rolston

The Philippines U/20 Rugby Union Team won the first of two games
against Guam 18-17.The first game was played under lights at the
International School of Manila and a crowd of 200 spectators came to
watch and support the u/20 International fixture.
The game was always going to be close with the
Philippines narrowly beating Guam 12-8, the last time these two sides
met at the Asian U/19 tournament in Kaoshiung.

Japan's men and women both won their respective
Asian Sevens titles in Hong Kong on Sunday to secure the top places
among the region's five qualifying teams for next year's Rugby World
Cup Sevens in Dubai.
Japan's men booked their place at next
year's World Cup alongside runners-up Hong Kong and the Arabian Gulf,
who were pre-qualified as hosts in the 24-team draw.
In the
crucial men's semi finals Japan and Hong Kong had advanced past China
(24-0) and Chinese Taipei (26-0) to confirm their places in Dubai on
5-7 March 2009.

HSBC has signed former All
Black legend and current coach of Japan, John Kirwan as a rugby ambassador.
Kirwan will work with HSBC primarily on their sponsorship of the HSBC Asian 5
Nations, as well as several international youth rugby projects across Asia.
Kirwan was capped 63 times for New Zealand and coached Italy before
joining Japan in 2007. He recently led the developing nation, who have risen to
16th in the International Rugby Board rankings, to a fifth place finish in the
Pacific Nations Cup - their best finish in three years.

This
week’s HSBC Asian 5 Nations Regional Tournament has been a big step towards
rugby finding a place in the rich Kyrgyz sporting culture.
The
game between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan yesterday brought an end to the week’s
rugby with the 15 all draw a just result. These two Rugby Federations are like
the children of neighbours that have grown up together; they have followed
similar paths from a very similar beginning, but are fiercely competitive.

Rugby World Cup Sevens 2009
qualifying continues this weekend with the Asian regional event in Hong Kong,
Japan's men and Kazakhstan's women favourites to win and book their places in
Dubai in March.
Japan heads the seedings in the 12-team men's
tournaments where two qualifier places are up for grabs, while reigning Asian
champions Kazakhstan will be looking to claim one of the three spots available
in the nine-team women's event, which will be played concurrently at the Hong
Kong Football Club.

test matches and win the HSBC Asian Five Nations Regional Tournament in
Jakarta. Today’s 55 – 3 demolition of
Cambodia followed Indonesia’s 23 – 11 win over Laos on Tuesday, 15 July, 2008.

sun-drenched and breezy UPH stadium in Karawaci, Jakarta, fans saw the Lao
PDR take on Cambodia. In a fast moving game, the Lao PDR put on a
performance that mesmorised the crowd and the opposition. With some
slick handling and strong running, the Lao PDR scored a 33 - 0 victory
to take the Mekong Cup onto Lao soil for the first time.

Union marked its first test match victory in eight attempts since 2005 with a
comprehensive 74 – 0 win over Brunei in today’s opening match of the HSBC Asian
Five Nations Regional Tournament played today at Wettengel Field in Dededo,
Guam.
Guam leapt out to an early lead, scoring it
first try through fullback Edward Calvo in just the 10th minute.

(27 June 2008, Guam): The
Guam Rugby Football Union will host the Philippines and Brunei Rugby Unions in
the first of four regional tournaments to be played in the inaugural HSBC Asian
Five Nations Series.
The
Guam Regional Tournament will be played under a single round robin format with
the first match between Guam and Brunei kicking off on Sunday, 29 June, at
Wettengel Field, Dededo, Guam.

14 June 2008: Thailand won the HSBC
Asian Five Nations Division II Tournament played today at the Army Stadium in
Bangkok. By virtue of their Division II
victory, Thailand is the qualifying team for the Rugby World Cup 2011
Qualifiers Asia Round I. Thailand also
earned promotion to the HSBC Asian Five Nations Division I Tournament in 2009,
which will serve as the Round II of the Rugby World Cup Qualifiers for
Asia.
